Life is a Journey

Things change so quickly, it brings to mind, that song What A Difference A Day Makes. And a week full of such days can be a bit unreal! Last Sunday Red and I were up early and ate breakfast out on the porch. Together we raked leaves from our front yard, taking them out to the edge of the street. I jump forward here to tell you, magically

Mark on Markets

As fuel prices continue to climb, I thought it would be good for us to discuss the Energy Markets. For better or worse, the price at the pump paid by the consumer is not based on a war in Ukraine, but instead by traders around the world that set the price based on their own opinions and strategies. Sure, current political situations in Russia or Iran play into those opinions, but not how you would think.

Here and There

I’m just back from an 11 day vacation, most of it cruising up the Mississippi. Not really a long time, but it was my first venture out of Pocahontas in two years. Returning here I noticed several changes had occurred over that short period.

Just Jana

Last night we were watching Chopped. It was a “broken heart” episode. Meaning, make comfort food to sooth you when you’ve been dumped. One of the basket ingredients was beef heart. I can’t tell you how many times as a teenager I was dumped and I went home to mom for a comforting bowl of beef heart.

Speaking French

I am officially in the last year of my 30s. It’s hard to imagine being almost 40. I don’t think 40 is old by any means, but it’s older than I’ve ever been. I spent Wednesday, my birthday, visiting with friends and family, reading texts and Facebook messages. Nothing makes anyone feel any better than all that attention. I’m considering changing my birthdate on social media every so often just to get all that attention again.

The Good Stuff

March Madness indeed is in full effect. Brackets busted to tiny pieces all over the place. Let’s do a quick show of hands if you had Saint Peter’s beating Kentucky and making it to the Sweet 16. Keep it up if you saw Michigan making a Lazurus-like revival just in time for the Tournament and knocking off Tennessee. Keep your hand up too if you saw North Carolina taking down No. 1 seed Baylor. I’m looking… looking….looking… yeah, not seeing too many hands raised. If your bracket has more red ink than a bad IRS tax return, don’t get too discouraged, because you’re certainly not alone. According to a sportingnews.com article that tracks the top four bracket sites – Yahoo, ESPN, CBS, and the official NCAA website - the last perfect bracket got busted on Friday night with Iowa State’s 11 -vs.-6 upset of LSU. Just as in 2021, it took 28 games for everyone to have at least one loss. Saint Peter’s shocking 15-2 upset over Kentucky on Thursday night busted the largest percentage of brackets that remained perfect through the first round — more than 20 million total across the four major bracket contests, according to NCAA.com. How big a chance exists to pick that upset, along with all the others necessary to achieve a perfect bracket?

Maynard Elementary Leprechaun Traps

Maynard Elementary Kindergarten through Third graders were given the opportunity to make a "Leprechaun Trap" for St. Patrick's Day. In Enrichment Classes, they read the story "How to Catch a Leprechaun" by Adam Wallace. The children in the story made traps to catch the leprechaun who entered their homes and played tricks on them! The students also learned that St. Patrick's Day is an Irish holiday and has many traditions like trying to get the Leprechaun's pot of gold. Julie Campbell, gifted and talented teacher, challenged the students to try to catch him with their traps. There was a tremendous response with 41 total traps made. All traps were judged and displayed during Parent Teacher Conferences.
