Pocahontas Public Schools Arkansas Public School Choice Application

In order to provide more options to parents and students with respect to where a child attends school, the Pocahontas School District is accepting students under the Arkansas Public School Choice Act. Per Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) guidelines, students must file a School Choice Application with the nonresident district on or before May 1, 2022 to attend school for the 2022-2023 school year. Applicants will be notified, by July 1, as th wheter the student’s application has been approved or rejected.

M.D. Williams GT Students Attend Story Store

The fifth grade Gifted and Talented class from M. D. Williams Intermediate School attended the annual Story Store performance on Friday, February 18 at the Walnut Ridge Community Center. Story Store is a collaborative effort between Ms. Melinda Williams and the theater department of Williams Baptist College and the schools in the Northeast Arkansas Education Cooperative. Stories are chosen from student submissions and portions of the selections are woven together into a dramatic presentation that is performed by the WBC theater students. The students from MDW whose stories were chosen this year were Akira Harris and Wyatt Hogan.

Maynard Archery Team Competes in 4A District Tournament

The Maynard Archery teams, made up of 72 archers, recently competed in the 4A District Regional Archery Tournament. The tournament was held virtually at Maynard Elementary School against Brookland, Piggott, GCT, EPC, Hillcrest,Marmaduke, Oak Grove, Paragould, Riverside, Valley View, and Westside. Our Elementary and Middle School teams finished 4th and our High School teams placed 6th.

Way Back When

Birdell – One of Arkansas’ Most Popular Resorts of Long Ago Birdell, in the 1920’s and early 30’s, was the most popular center of recreation in Randolph County, and the Eleven Point River paradise drew large crowds for family reunions, picnics, swimming, socializing, and having fun. A bridge next to the resort area made access easy and the soothing noise of the Eleven Point River flowing over the old mill dam created an atmosphere of “this was the place to be.” The old steel bridge was a challenge to some of the most daring who risked diving off its top.

The Maynard Gang

Before resuming our nostalgic trip down Fourche River, I must bore most of you with some ad hoc genealogy. The ancestral rumination was triggered by a Maynard Junior Boys basketball game. Other than being stalwart and much beloved lads, three of Maynard’s starters share a distinction. They are all descended from two of our county’s founding families.

Around 3am our tv turned itself on again. For 3 minutes we argued over who had the remote to turn it off. After I lost that argument I fumbled with the buttons to shut it down. I apparently hit one for the tv information because Mike says “What channel is this?” Like I care what’s on at 3am. “It says Dolly. We have a Dolly channel?” Half awake now I said “No, that’s the tv’s name.” We had to name it when Kyle was setting up Netflix. We get the tv off and lay back down. I guess it was just too much for him and he had to ask “Why is the tv named Dolly?” Mind you this is the 74” tv I won. I said “Because it’s top heavy.” No more words were spoken... just a couple of giggles.
