Blast from the past…1922

Notice the American flag? The 48 star flag became the official flag of the United States on July 4, 1912. The U.S. flag grew to 48 stars with the addition of two southwestern states: New Mexico (January 6, 1912) and Arizona (February 14, 1912). President Taft dated the Executive Order on June 24, 1912, and establish the new proportions of the flag. The flag now arranged for the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each, with a single point of each star to be upward. For 47 years, the 48-star American flag flew longer than any other American flag. It lasted through two World Wars. A total of eight Presidents served under this flag; William H. Taft (1909-1913), Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921), Warren Harding (1921-1923), Calvin Coolidge (1923-1933), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945), Harry S. Truman (1945-1953), Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961).

What’s Cooking

I’m not fond of cold weather and some of my plants in my garden don’t look very happy either, however today, Sunday, was a lovely sunny day and my many faithful daffodils are all in bloom, telling me that spring is coming. I remember the verse we used to chant as children when the daffodils were in bloom. Daffy-Down-Dilly has come to town in a yellow petticoat and a green gown.

Around the Kitchen Table with Nanny

Reading Bill Carroll’s column in last week’s paper put me in a nostalgic mood, I guess. Growing up in Pocahontas hand having lived so long (not that I’m old or anything). It made me look back over all the years and, of course, brought up many memories of people I have known, one of them being a favorite of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. It is our own Marie Davis who lived the be 108 years old. She was so much fun to be around to talk “old times” with. And she is just one of our town’s greatest treasures. I would like to share some of her recipes with you. She was a wonderful cook and everyone wanted one of the “Tamale Pies” she made by the dozens for the Methodist Church Bazaar every year. She always had a long list of people who put their orders in ahead of time, including my dad who ordered at least two.
