What’s going on at the Humane Society

First, spring is just around the corner! RCHS wants to help as many people as possible with spay or neuter surgeries BEFORE the onset of unwanted puppies and kittens. Fixing your pet is best for the pet, for the owner, and for the community. RCHS has grant monies available specifically for spay-neuter assistance. Don’t delay! Applications are available on the RCHS Facebook page; “old fashioned” paper applications are available at either veterinary clinic in Pocahontas. Applicants must include proof of income. A modest copay is required, depending on income, and MAY be as low as $20. Who can pass up a deal like that?

Blast from the past… The Hamil Home

The photo above is the old residence of R.N. Hamil as it looked from 1885 until it was remodeled in 1913. Mr. Hamil built a one-story house on the site about 1870 and added the second story in 1885. In 1913 he brick-veneered the house and put in electricity, running water and heat. Mr. Hamil’s son, Dr. W.E. Hamil’s residence built in 1912, is just south of the old family home and is built on the exact site of the home of Ransom Bettis – atop the original Bettis Bluff. The Bettis burying ground was located between the two Hamil homes until the graves were moved to Masonic Cemetery. The Hamil yard is perhaps the oldest in Pocahontas, some of the trees having been on the lots as early as the 1830s.
