Mary Lawana Hinkle 1934-2020

Mary Lawana Hinkle went home to our Heavenly Father on January 12, 2020 in Apopka FL. She was 85 years old and was born on June 12, 1934 in Scott County near Oran, Missouri to Emmett Otto & Dollie Mary Hinkle. She was one of 9 children growing up in Pocahontas, Arkansas with her siblings Lois (Darling), Layman Hinkle, Sanford Hinkle, Marilyn (Tyler), Louise (Wicker), Jeannie (Eagan), Delnora (Jones). She married at 17 years old to William Glenn Quirk moving to San Francisco CA, Chicago IL, Saranac Lake NY, Miami FL, Orlando FL and then to Anchorage Alaska in 1974. She later married Gordon DeWitt in 1989.

Rudy Hausman 1949-2022

Rudy Hausman, 73 of Pocahontas passed away February 16, 2022, at his home. He was born January 16, 1949, to the late Louis Frank Hausman and Wanda Van Winkle Hausman in Engelberg, AR. Rudy was in the 4 infantry in the Army serving in Vietnam. While in the Army he received the following decoration medals and badges, NDSM, VSM, 1 OS Bar, Purple Heart, RVNCM W 60 Device, SS W Rifle Bar M14. After the military he became a Postal worker where he retired after 25+ years. He was married to Marilyn and celebrated their 50 anniversary January 14, 2022. He was a great husband, father, and friend.

Frances J. “Fran” (Van Hooser) Allison 1934-2022

Frances J. “Fran” (Van Hooser) Allison, age 87, of Jonesboro, AR, finished this life on February 18, 2022. Born in Broseley, MO on August 20, 1934, to Marcus D. Van Hooser and E. Pauline (Goble) Van Hooser. While she was very young, the family moved from Missouri to Pontiac, MI. It was there she met her husband, George, while he was “up North”, working between college terms. They married December 6, 1949. When he passed last year, they had been married for 71 years. Early in their careers and marriage, they lived in Oklahoma and Michigan. They returned to Arkansas in 1958, residing in Pocahontas, Rector, Searcy, Corning and finally, since 1978, Jonesboro. Fran and George were married at a younger age that is present custom. Though high school was interrupted by marriage and family, she finished her secondary education by correspondence courses. Fran postponed college for the sake of her children. Three of her four children were grown by the time she received her bachelor’s degree in history from Arkansas State University in 1974, where she also attained a master’s degree in 1975. Her first education position was at Knobel, AR, where she taught social studies and was the Guidance Counselor. Fran was at Bay, AR, from 1983 to 2008. She enjoyed reading about history, geography, psychology, and people. Fran loved music and had a beautiful soprano voice, valued all different types of music and was particularly fond of classical and vocal. During her life, she conveyed her enthusiasm and fascination for learning to family and students alike. In her position as guidance counselor, Fran positively influenced many students and aided them in making the right personal and career choices. And many through the years have expressed their appreciation to her.

Randolph County Chamber hires new director

The Randolph County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is proud to announce that Cally Shore has accepted the position of Executive Director. Although born in Lansing, Michigan, Cally has spent most of her life in Randolph County. She has served in various capacities in her career. However, she is most known for her work at the Randolph County office for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service and her involvement in the 4-H program. Most recently, she has held a position in the Adult and Community Education department at Black River Technical College helping to develop the local workforce through education and partnerships with area businesses.

Senior Redskins Lose to Brookland Bearcats 44-43 in Final Home Game

In a Wednesday night game played at Schoonover Field House the Senior Boys Redskins lost to the Brookland Bearcats in a critical 4A-3 conference game 44-43. The first half was dominated by tight defense with Brookland leading 12-9 at end of first quarter and 25-22 at the half. The Bearcats scored the first two points of the third quarter and led at the end of the quarter 36-34. Pocahontas tied the game 38-38 with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter. The remainder of the game was characterized by good defense and careful shot selection by both teams. Brookland triumphed winning the game 44-43. The Bearcats outshot the Redskins by shooting 46% from the field to Pocahontas’s 32%. Both teams were 28% on 3-point attempts. The Redskins were 71% and Brookland 45% from the charity stripe. The Redskins also led in rebounds 21-20. Mason Baltz led the Redskins with 14 points-9 rebounds-4 assists, followed by Ely Baltz with 9 points-6 rebounds-1 assist, Harrison Carter 8 points-6 rebounds-3 assists, Bryce Mason 8 points-1 rebound, 1 assist, Justin DeJournett 4 points-5 rebounds, and Will Mason-3 rebounds-1 assist. Adam Perry also had several minutes of playing time. York led Brookland with 15 points
