Pocahontas School Board has special meeting
The Pocahontas Public School Board met on January 6 at the Pocahontas Junior High Campus for a special board meeting. Lesa Grooms provided the members of the board with an update on current Covid numbers.

In a Monday night game played at A. L. Huston Memorial Center in Highland the Pocahontas Senior Boys Redskins beat the Highland Rebels 62-50. The Rebels jumped out early with 12-2 lead and lead by 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Redskins jumped into the lead with 23-22 with three minutes to go in the fist half and the score was tied at half 25-25.

Randolph County transformed into a winter wonderland on Thursday, January 6. Only lasting a few hours, the snow was enjoyed by many. Mistina Hibbard took this photo of the Pocahontas statue at Riverfront Park. For more pictures from Hibbard and Ben Derrick, see page 14.

I’ve always heard that the first step in getting help for any issue is admitting that you have a problem. Well, I’ve got a problem, that I’m quite ashamed of, and I figure this safe space is the best way to bring it into the light. Seventh Grade boys were beaten by Highland 24-20 in closely contested game. Pocahontas started out cold and were behind 13-8 at one point and 16-13 at the half. Both teams played good defense the last half with Highland coming out on top 24-20. Spencer James scoring with 8 points, Noah Baltz followed with six, and Isaac Molina with 4 points.

The Pocahontas Junior Redskins had an uphill battle in keeping their unbeaten record intact. Final score was Pocahontas 42 and Highland 41. Highland built up a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 24 to 14 lead at the half. The Junior Redskins kept battling and cut the lead to 33-28 at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the fourth quarter the Junior Redskins trimmed the lead to four with two minutes left and 2 points with a one minute sixteen seconds left in the game. Luke Baltz tied the game with a jumper in the lane with 42 seconds left. A tenacious defense goes the ball back and Luke Baltz sank the first free throw in a one and one with 28.2 seconds left to put the Junior Redskin up a point 42 to 41. This was the Junior Redskins first lead of the game. The Junior Rebels tried several times to get a last second shot but the Junior Redskins prevailed and won the game by a score of 42 to 41.
