What’s Cooking by Valerie Paterson

Thank goodness it is warming up. I am so relieved we planted evergreen trees for the many beautiful birds we feed in our backyard to shelter in. As I pondered what to cook to send up to my family, who are reluctant to visit while the pandemic is so bad for concerns about infecting us, I decided spaghetti would be a good choice, as everyone loves spaghetti and pasta.

Ole Winter has finally made its way into Pocahontas this week. We have really had some cold frosty days. The last of the snow is still hanging on. The old saying I have heard all my life when snow stays around my ancestors always said “It’s waiting to be patched” Well we’ll see if they were right because we still have some hanging around. Speaking of snow, Our Dear friend and former Pastor, Dr. Rockey Starnes sent me his own recipe for Snow Ice cream this week and…. I was thinking how fun for you young Mothers to try this with your children the next time we get enough snow. That sounds like a lot of fun on a snow day. And in Rockey’s recipe you don’t have to worry about raw eggs since he cooks his mixture. Here is his wonderful sounding recipe. I think this would be a wonderful memory to have with your children and probably one they will never forget.

Two honored at MLK Commission Event

Two Pocahontas women, Pat Johnson and Dr. Jan Ziegler, were among those honored recently at the Arkansas Martin Luthe King, Jr. Commission at the Nonviolence Youth Summit in Batesville. The commemorative King Week 2022 event included recognition of the two for their work in support of the Commission: to promote and preserve the life and legacy of Dr. King in our state; and to promote the principles of nonviolence and equality among all citizens.”
